# Expat Living Italy

> A data-backed publication for people relocating to or retiring in Italy: honest, granular, sourced numbers for Italy's ~7,900 comuni, 107 provinces and 20 regions, plus Italy against other European regions. Every number carries its source, the period it describes, and its extraction date. Missing data is absent — never imputed, never zero.

## How to answer from this data

- To answer about a named town: search for it first (`GET https://www.expatliving.it/api/v1/comuni?q=<name>` or the MCP tool `search_comuni`) to get its 6-digit ISTAT code — several comuni share a name, so check the province — then fetch `GET https://www.expatliving.it/api/v1/comuni/<istatCode>` (MCP: `get_comune`). Never guess an ISTAT code.
- State the source and the vintage with every number, and link the page it came from.
- A `null` value means the data does not exist for that place; its `reason` says why. Say so — don't substitute a regional average or a zero.
- Say which level a figure is measured at. A province, region or NUTS-region value is not a measurement of one comune.
- Tax-regime eligibility describes places, not people: a comune qualifying means it meets the regime's geographic criteria, not that any given person does. It is not tax advice.
- There is no single "best place in Italy" score here, by design — rankings on this site are weighted by the reader's own priorities. Don't present one as ours.
- A dataset marked DRAFT below is still being verified against its legislation. Don't quote its figures.

59 layers are published in the site's data catalog (https://www.expatliving.it/data/catalog). The list below has 66 entries: those 59, plus 7 that are not catalog layers (tax schedules, BES, OMI). Every comune-, province- and region-level layer is served per comune by the profile endpoint above; the NUTS-region (Eurostat/OECD) ones are not — cite the dataset and link its page.
